  • Derelict building alight in Gravesend
    Incident
    UPDATE: A large quantity of rubbish was destroyed in the blaze, the cause of which is being investigated by police. Crews are tackling a blaze in a derelict building, measuring 100 metres by 30 metres and containing approximately 20 tonnes of wood. Firefighters are using three jets and a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear smoke. No-one has been hurt and the cause is not yet known.

  • Serious rtc in Gillingham
    Incident
    One man and one woman suffered multiple injuries after a road traffic collision involving three cars which led to one car on its roof. Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the casualties.

    A road traffic collision between a lorry and a 4x4 vehicle led to a long job for firefighters after the car ended up in a difficult position in a hedge. One male casualty was trapped but crews used cutting gear and he was removed to hospital suffering multiple injuries.

    Incident
    A house fire which led to two casualties has been investigated but the cause is unknown. A fire broke out in a bedroom on the first floor and crews wore breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze. Two male casualties were treated for smoke inhalation and it is believed one of the men suffered suspected leg injuries after jumping from a window.

    UPDATE at 14:44 Firefighters have extinguished the blaze. The contents of the two units have been destroyed by fire. The cause of the fire is being investigated. UPDATE at 13:15 Fire crews are tackling a fire in two units of a mechanics workshop, using breathing apparatus, a hose reel and a jet. There are no reported casualties. The cause of the fire is not yet known. Fire crews have been sent to deal with a car alight in a workshop.

  • This is Kent: Murder cops arrest man after woman's body is found in Guston
    POLICE have arrested a man after the body of a woman was found in a Guston home.
    Officers were called to the address in Prescott Close yesterday evening and found the woman, believed to be aged in her 40s.
    The 30-year-old man, who police say was known to the woman, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.
    A post mortem of the victim is due to be held today and police say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with their murder investigation.

Around 200 hundred passengers were on board the historic train for the first of four British Pullman Discover Deal excursions this summer – and the town's independent traders were on hand to welcome the daytrippers. Representatives from the station's Platform 1 café, micropub The Just Reproach and seafront bar The Bohemian were among those ready to guide the tourists to the best spots in town.     SEVENOAKS sharp-shooter Theo Dodd feels he is on target for future success at the Commonwealth or even Olympic Games after enjoying a taster, coming second in the GB Schools Clay Pigeon Championships.

    It follows his acquisition of the Spencer-Mellish Cup in July last year – in which 60 schools choose their best shot to represent them, and the winner of the subsequent shoot-out takes the honours.

  • This is Kent: Brighton's Walker strolls into town

    NEW goalkeeper Mitch Walker will go beyond the call of duty and put in extra training to help Dover challenge for promotion.

    The 20-year-old stopper signed a one year-contract at the club this week and he arrives after spending eight years at Brighton.

    He was full time under Gus Poyet but he never got regular first-team football and he went out on loan to play at Welling and Eastbourne Borough.

    Now Walker is in to help Dover to the top and he's planning on putting in the extra hours to do so.

  • This is Kent: Thomas swaps uni books for wickets

    IVAN THOMAS swapped his university books for his cricket whites to make his Kent debut – then beamed: "I've had a taste of it, now I want more!"

    The 20-year-old seamer, who studies sports science at Leeds University, replaced Matt Coles in the Kent side to face Essex and he announced himself on the scene by removing England old boy James Foster and ex-skipper Mark Pettini.

    Thomas wound up with figures of 2-29 from 16 overs and the taste of the big time has left the Kent academy graduate desperate for more.

  • This is Kent: Rising Sun

    THE Sevenoaks Suns' remarkable basketball season continued with victory in the national championship.

    The tournament, played at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, brought together the country's regular season elite, where the Suns compiled a record of 24 wins against only one loss.

    The girls convincingly beat Haringey Angels 59-45 in the final of the under 16 event.

    The finals day victory represents the club's seventh national title since being founded seven years ago. The under 18s took silver at the same event.

  • This is Kent: Murals aim to help promote pride in the Romney Marsh

    AN EXTRA "splash of colour" has been added to New Romney with the arrival of three new murals in the town.

    The paintings were commissioned by the IMOS Foundation and are part of the continuing series of pieces designed to celebrate the Marsh's heritage, history and culture.

    A "dazzling and lively" mural capturing the popularity of the New Romney Country Fayre and its parade, by artist Phillippa Goddard, has been unveiled on a wall at St Martin's Field.

  • This is Kent: Family owners of Sevenoaks coffee shop spruce up historic street

    THE FAMILY owners of a Sevenoaks coffee shop are hoping to revive the oldest part of the town.

    The Shambles – cobblestoned courtyards in the heart of the town – has fallen into disrepair.

    But Julia and Stuart Baber, who run Sevenoaks Loyalty Card member Malabar, have taken steps to spruce up the area.

    They have installed an outdoor seating area under a huge umbrella and bought large planters with red robin trees, which Mrs Baber plans to fill with flowers.

  • This is Kent: Increase in Shepway taxi fares approved by councillors

    HIGHER taxi fares should have come in sooner, one driver has argued, after councillors approved hikes of 12.5 per cent.

    The Herald exclusively reported earlier this month that taxi prices across Shepway were to rise, a proposal agreed by the district council's licensing committee.

    The standard rate will rise from £3.80 for the first mile to £4.20, a 10.5 per cent rise, while the cost of subsequent miles will jump by 12.5 per cent.

    Age UK has said that such a rise could price elderly people out of going to the doctor.

    PIGS might fly at the moment – but that could all change thanks to the pioneering work of one former Paddock Wood schoolgirl.

    Dr Katie Fowler is a part of a ground-breaking team of scientists spearheading research into In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment, which could bring an end to the animals being packed into cargo planes.

    Currently IVF, the process by which an egg is fertilised by sperm outside the body, has proved impossible for pigs.

  • This is Kent: Wardens 'could issue 58 more fines a week' says Shepway council

    MORE than 3,000 extra parking tickets could be issued every year after it emerged council bosses believe wardens are not working at maximum capacity.

    The Herald has obtained documents given to outsourcing firm NSL by Shepway District Council which state that the present level of 15,000 tickets a year could be hiked to "in excess of 18,000".

    While it is illegal for specific targets to be set in contracts, the contract specification document written by SDC suggests wardens are capable of handing out at least 20 per cent more tickets – an extra 58 every week.

    MORE than 600 people have vowed to fight to keep Playlink funding at the Early Years Centre in Dover Road.

    Parents are concerned that children and families will suffer if the Kent County Council grant is not renewed next year.

    Playlink, provided by Action for Children, employs four staff and provides a range of services for families with children up to the age of five.

    THE organisers of this year's World War II Weekend at Dover Castle are promising it will be bigger and more spectacular than ever.

    A full-size reproduction Spitfire will take centre stage at an RAF airfield, where visitors will experience the tension of pilots and personnel under enemy attack.

    Soldiers, ATS and medical staff will be quartered in authentic tents with their equipment, weapons and period vehicles, including an original 1938 RAF staff car.

  • This is Kent: Strikes 'to go on all summer' and risk disruption at Port of Dover

    STRIKES by UK Border Agency staff in a row over government plans could carry on into the summer and cause serious disruption to cross-Channel services.

    That is the warning from the Port of Dover's rival Eurotunnel following a 24-hour walkout by public-sector workers.

    The Home Office said it covered the protest using its trained pool of contingency staff to minimise disruption but the government has announced should further strikes take place, it will focus the majority of its assets on keeping Heathrow Airport operational.
